Is Davy Jones Coming Back?
While the Pirates of the Caribbean saga has been quiet for a long time, hopes for the series are blossoming again. Veteran actor Bill Nighy has announced his willingness to reprise his role as Davy Jones. As Disney prepares to reboot the series, Nighy’s announcement has excited fans.
Bill Nighy Wants to Reprise His Davy Jones Role
First seen in the 2006 film Dead Man’s Chest, Davy Jones has become one of the most memorable villains in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. Portrayed using motion capture technology, Bill Nighy left his mark on the series as the cursed sailor who seeks to possess Jack Sparrow’s soul. Recalling those days in an interview, the actor said, “Yes, I would love to return.”
Nighy confirmed that the production team had approached him about returning in the past. “A producer asked me, ‘Would you like to come back without the tentacles?’ I said, ‘Why not?'” Nighy maintained both his commitment to the character and his humorous style. He also mentioned the character’s brief flashback scene in At World’s End, calling the character’s makeup and costume designs “impeccable.”
The new Pirates of the Caribbean film has been in development for a long time. Since the 2017 release of Dead Men Tell No Tales, many different scenarios have been considered for the sixth installment. While a spin-off story starring Margot Robbie was once planned, producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s latest statements indicate that the new film will be a “soft reboot,” meaning it will introduce new characters and bring back old faces.
The sequel could refocus on the story of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. In the finale of “At World’s End,” Will inherited Davy Jones’s curse and became captain of the Flying Dutchman. While the curse appeared to be broken in the fifth film, Davy Jones’s shadow reappeared in the post-credits scene. This was interpreted as a strong hint that the character may still be alive.
Orlando Bloom is also keen to return to the series as Will Turner. If both Bloom and Nighy rejoin the cast, the producers could continue the series without relying on Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. Such a scenario would be both pleasing to longtime fans and offering a fresh start for new viewers.
