Is Overwatch 2 Bringing Back 6v6 Mode?
Blizzard has begun testing a 6v6 game mode for Overwatch 2, responding to fan demands. The game’s transition to a 5v5 format was criticized by many players, and this new test is considered a return to classic gameplay. However, there is no clear statement yet on whether 6v6 will be permanent in Overwatch 2. Blizzard emphasizes that the success of this mode depends on player feedback.
What’s Changing in Overwatch 2 6v6 Mode?
Blizzard is focusing on reducing long queue times, one of the biggest complaints of players, in the new 6v6 mode. Game director Aaron Keller explained that they developed a system that will have a minimum of one and a maximum of three players from each role during the team creation process. This arrangement aims to shorten the queue times caused by the intense interest in the DPS role in particular.
Fan interest in this testing period has once again shown the popularity of the 6v6 mode. However, Blizzard needs to work more on character balance and game mechanics before this mode can be added to Overwatch 2 permanently. The return to the 6v6 format will require reversing the changes made to the characters for 5v5 and making further fine-tuning.
Blizzard is continuing to collect player feedback on the 6v6 mode. This testing period will last until January 6, 2025, and player feedback will determine the future of the mode. The company has not yet made a decision on whether this mode will be made permanent.
In the meantime, players can switch between both the classic 6v6 and 5v5 formats. With this experiment, Blizzard is taking an important step in determining the future direction of Overwatch 2 while responding to community requests. If the 6v6 mode becomes permanent, Overwatch 2 could regain its old fans.
