Is the GameCube Controller Returning for Switch 2?
Nintendo is on the agenda with a new development that could excite GameCube fans. The company’s recent application to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) includes a description of a “wireless Bluetooth game controller.” The model number and controller design in the application have led some fans to speculate that this could be a GameCube controller adapted for the Switch 2.
Is the GameCube Controller Coming to the Switch 2?
The images in the FCC application show a design on the back of the controller that resembles the area where the C-Stick is located on the GameCube controller. It is also stated that the controller does not include NFC support. While this weakens the possibility of the controller being the Switch 2 Pro Controller, it strengthens the claims that Nintendo may re-release the classic GameCube controller as a wireless model.
Nintendo has previously offered classic controllers such as the NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 with wireless models adapted to the Switch Online subscription service. In this context, it is thought that the GameCube controller could be integrated into the Switch Online service in a similar way. In particular, the fact that the GameCube controller is preferred in games such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate shows that this controller maintains its popularity.
The Switch 2, which is expected to be introduced as Nintendo’s next-generation console, has also increased expectations for access to classic games. The addition of GameCube games to the Switch Online service is an innovation that has been requested by fans for a long time. However, Nintendo has only offered GameCube games in certain remaster projects so far. Metroid Prime Remastered and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door can be given as examples of this.
Nintendo has not made an official statement regarding this application. However, the company is expected to share more information about the Switch 2 and the new controller during a Direct event to be held in April 2025. These developments continue to create great excitement for gamers experiencing GameCube nostalgia.
