Frankenstein is a classic story that has been revived in various adaptations over the years. Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited version premiered at the Venice Film Festival. However, the film, which many expected to be a reference to artificial intelligence, gained a completely different interpretation with the director’s comments.
Del Toro’s Commentary on Frankenstein
Del Toro emphasized at the press conference that Frankenstein is not a metaphor for AI. The director stated that in our age, fear and oppression force humanity into a binary understanding, and that this film focuses on flawed characters trying to understand each other. He believes that the essence of the story lies in accepting human nature, even with its flaws.
The renowned director also stated that he is not afraid of artificial intelligence. “I’m not afraid of artificial intelligence, I’m afraid of natural stupidity,” del Toro noted, emphasizing that the film focuses on humanity, not technological debates. This approach positions Frankenstein as a classic family drama, rather than overshadowing a contemporary debate.
Adapted from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, the film aims to offer a more dramatic framework with its emotional layers. Del Toro’s interpretation elevates the story to a more human and emotional level, making it easier for audiences to connect with the characters. This means that Frankenstein will not only contain horror but also powerful messages about human relationships.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 30, 2025. Following a limited theatrical release on October 17, it will be released globally on Netflix on November 7. This process already indicates that Frankenstein will be one of the most talked-about productions of the year, both for festival audiences and the wider public.
