Isn’t Phantom Blade Zero Actually Soulslike?
Phantom Blade Zero, which left the impression of being soulslike with its first trailers, attracted attention with its fast sword fights and dark atmosphere. However, Soulframe Liang, CEO of developer studio S-Game, emphasized that it is not right to associate the game with this genre. According to him, the game has a unique structure that can create its own genre.
“Soulslike” Definition Is Not Correct for Phantom Blade Zero
In the developer letter shared on S-Game’s official Phantom Blade Zero X page, CEO Liang made statements about the genre classifications made after the game’s introduction. The game, which first started to be known with the soulslike label, broke this perception with the fighting demos released later and was thought to be closer to the hack and slash genre. However, Liang stated that neither definition fully reflects the game.
According to Liang, Phantom Blade Zero is neither slow-paced like soulslike nor completely fast and combo-based like traditional action games. Instead, he describes the game as an action experience blended with role-playing elements. He even suggests a unique genre for this style as “Wuxia Action Games.” This definition emphasizes stories and aesthetics based on Chinese martial arts.
The game’s release date has not yet been announced, but the developers want players to focus on the experience that will be offered rather than genre expectations. Phantom Blade Zero’s real-time, fluid and stylized combat system aims for a structure that goes beyond classic patterns. Soulframe Liang’s statements indicate that the game will be unique not only with its visuals but also with its gameplay structure.
