James Gunn Announces New Superman Project
DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn made a statement about the future of Superman that both excited and confused fans. While expectations for a sequel had built following the box office success of the Superman film, Gunn stated that Superman would play a significant role in this project, but that it would not be called “Superman 2.” Responding to questions on social media, Gunn directly addressed the project’s descriptions and expectations. The director’s statements also offer some clues about the new direction of the DC Universe.
New Project Not a Sequel, But Superman Focused
James Gunn, in a statement on Threads, stated that the new film would focus on Superman, but not a sequel in the traditional sense. “It’s the same movie, but it’s not ‘Superman 2,'” he said, directing fan expectations. This statement suggests the character will still be central, but the story will unfold from different perspectives. Gunn’s definition of a sequel is more flexible; his description of the second season of the Peacemaker series as a “direct continuation” reveals his different perspective on narrative continuity.
While the title or theme of the new project hasn’t yet been announced, it’s clear it won’t be a Superman-Batman partnership like World’s Finest. Supergirl’s summer 2026 release appears to be part of DC’s plans to expand the Kryptonian universe. Gunn also left the door open to rumors of Superman vs. The Authority, which could feature Superman alongside a Guardians of the Galaxy-style team.
Gunn’s statements about fan culture have garnered as much attention as the information he’s shared about the project. His comments about SnyderVerse supporters attempting to disrupt the Peacemaker panel at Comic-Con have taken a clear stance against social media toxicity. While Gunn initially mocked the situation, he later offered strong criticism of online violence and hate speech.
The film’s cast is already raising expectations. David Corenswet stars as Superman/Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced are also involved. Gunn describes this new Superman as a triangle of “hope, empathy, and action,” and will offer audiences an epic yet emotional experience.
