James Gunn Has Regrets About Cavill-Free Superman
James Gunn has revealed that the turmoil that erupted during his time at the helm of DC Studios paved the way for his split with Henry Cavill over the role of Superman. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the renowned director admitted that having to inform Cavill of this decision was quite difficult for him.
Confusion and Emotional Burden in the Superman Decision
James Gunn stated that the announcement of Cavill’s return as Superman on the same day his deal with DC Studios was signed, and that he was stunned by the announcement. The lack of clarity within studio management at the time led to such cross-talk. “It was completely unfair and really frustrating,” Gunn summarized the process.
Henry Cavill, who was forced to resign from his superhero role, was reportedly handling the process with maturity. Gunn stated that Cavill’s only request was that the news be announced first. The actor’s approach demonstrated the professional respect between them.
The role of the new Superman ultimately went to David Corenswet. Jacob Elordi, Tom Brittney, Andrew Richardson, and Nicholas Hoult were also among the candidates, and Cavill supported Corenswet’s selection. Cavill’s uplifting message to the new Superman revealed no hard feelings between the two actors.
James Gunn added that he would love to see Cavill involved in another DC Universe project. While there are no official plans for this at the moment, Gunn’s decision to not close the door completely was noteworthy. The Superman film is currently in theaters, and the groundwork for the new universe has begun.
