James Gunn Reveals the Latest Status of Constantine 2
DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn spoke about the long-anticipated Constantine 2. The film, which will star Keanu Reeves again, has been in development for years. While Gunn said he hadn’t yet read the script, he stated that he was closely following the team’s work. This statement suggests the project is truly progressing.
James Gunn Confirms He’s Talked to Keanu Reeves About Constantine 2
James Gunn shared new information about Constantine 2 in an interview with BobaTalks. The renowned director said, “We’ve talked to Keanu occasionally. He’s a great guy, and so is his team. They’re very talented, but I haven’t read the script yet,” adding that the process is in its early stages. This statement comes after Reeves announced last week that a new draft of the script was completed.
Constantine 2 has been a project in development for many years. The first film, released in 2005, gained cult status with its dark atmosphere and Keanu Reeves’ iconic performance. While numerous attempts at a sequel have been made over the years, the projects have always been left unfinished. However, this time, the situation appears different. Reeves’ statement last month, “The new draft is complete and will be presented to the studio,” sparked hope.
DC Studios is reshaping its core universe with films like Superman and Peacemaker. However, Constantine 2 will not be part of this universe. The film will tell its own independent story under the “DC Elseworlds” banner, like Joker and The Batman. This will maintain a darker tone while allowing the story to unfold freely.
Developed by Keanu Reeves, director Francis Lawrence, and screenwriter David Callaham, the project was greenlit by DC Studios in early 2025. With the support of producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch, the film is now moving into pre-production. It’s not yet known whether the script has been officially submitted to the studio, but the fact that both Reeves and Gunn spoke within the same month suggests the project is progressing seriously.
The original Constantine, from 2005, held a distinct place among dark comic book adaptations. While NBC’s 2014 series was short-lived, the character, played by Matt Ryan, lived on in the Arrowverse. Now, the spotlight is once again on Keanu Reeves’ Constantine. Gunn’s cautious yet positive statements suggest that the return fans have long awaited is not far off.
