John Romero Returns to His Big Project

There are promising developments for John Romero. According to Romero, the major project, which was recently canceled and caused his studio to fall on hard times, hasn’t been completely shelved. On the contrary, the gaming legend is working to revive the project. In his own words, John Romero emphasizes that he retains all rights, including the IP and code, and that this long journey is far from over.

John Romero Wants to Rebuild His Major Project, Even If It’s From Scratch

John Romero stated that despite the project being left unfinished, he has no intention of giving up. The creator of cult series like DOOM and Quake stated that they will not let years of development go to waste. He even stated that they will rebuild the same John Romero project if necessary, and that all available assets will be utilized.

John Romero Returns to His Big Project

The studio announced that the project was approximately “halfway through” when funding was withdrawn. While this was quite challenging, especially for a visionary like John Romero, their continued commitment is clear. Furthermore, it’s been reported that there’s already significant interest from various companies in the John Romero project. This means the studio is searching for a more suitable and sustainable partnership this time around.

Another noteworthy point in Romero’s statements is that the approximately “$50 million in development value” on hand won’t go to waste. The improved systems, art assets, and core game code are enough to accelerate even a completely new production. This suggests that the John Romero project could emerge in a different form, even if not in its original form.

This process also highlights the challenges independent and mid-sized studios face when working with major publishers. However, considering John Romero’s determination, experience, and industry connections, the likelihood of a positive outcome seems quite high. The gaming world is already listening intently.

So, do you think John Romero will be able to bring this major project back? Would a completely new game or a modernized version of the original concept be better?
