Julian LeFay, Father of the Elder Scrolls, Has Passed Away
Julian LeFay, known in the gaming world as the man who laid the foundations for the Elder Scrolls series, passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 59. LeFay, who quietly continued his battle with cancer, passed away deeply, especially for the developer OnceLost Games, as well as for the millions of gamers who knew him and were inspired by his work. In his wake, Julian LeFay left not only a game series but also a symbol of creative freedom and imagination.
Silence in the Gaming World After Julian LeFay
Julian LeFay joined Bethesda in its early years and etched his name in gaming history with the first Elder Scrolls games, Arena and Daggerfall. He made such a profound impact that one of the gods in the Elder Scrolls universe, “Julianos,” was named after him. He later founded OnceLost Games with former Bethesda developers Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman and began work on a new role-playing game called The Wayward Realms.
It was announced last week that LeFay had retired from active duty. According to CEO Peterson, LeFay chose to spend his final moments peacefully with his family. Despite this, even during his illness, he continued to inspire the development team and share his vision. In its announcement, OnceLost Games emphasized that his guidance continues to shape their projects.
The studio stated that Julian LeFay was “a figure who encouraged countless developers in the gaming world and pushed them to push creative boundaries.” Furthermore, they stated that his contribution was not limited to their own teams but was reflected in the stories, universes, and moments experienced by millions of players. Therefore, The Wayward Realms project will be completed in his honor.
In the loss of Julian LeFay, the industry lost not only a developer but also a philosophy. A pioneer of RPG experiences that prioritized creativity and exploration, LeFay left behind an unforgettable legacy and earned his place among the legends of the gaming world.
