Ken Kutaragi Still Hiding Nintendo PlayStation
The legendary Nintendo PlayStation in the gaming world is once again on the agenda. This unique device was developed in 1991 in collaboration between Sony and Nintendo, but the project was shelved due to disagreements between the two companies. Now, it has been revealed that PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi kept a Nintendo PlayStation prototype in his home.
A Second Nintendo PlayStation Prototype Uncovered
In 2020, the only known Nintendo PlayStation prototype was sold at an auction for $360,000. However, Julian Domanski, a videographer and photographer based in Japan, confirmed the existence of a second prototype in a conversation with Kutaragi. Domanski shared on social media, “I never thought I would see something this rare, but today I got the chance to touch a Nintendo PlayStation. Ken Kutaragi has one hidden in his closet. He also signed our PS1.”
The Nintendo PlayStation was planned as a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES. However, Nintendo ended its partnership with Sony and chose to work with Philips. This decision led Sony to develop a standalone game console, the PlayStation, and revolutionized the gaming world.
The Nintendo PlayStation prototype included a CD drive compatible with the SNES hardware and was capable of running CD-based games. However, since the device was never released, it has become one of the rarest items in the gaming world. Kutaragi’s preservation of the prototype shows that he preserved an important part of this historic device.
The Nintendo PlayStation is an important reminder of how the gaming industry was shaped. The separation of Sony and Nintendo led to Sony becoming a giant with the PlayStation. This rare prototype continues to shed light on gaming history and remains a source of unique nostalgia for gamers.
