Korean Studios in Race for New StarCraft

StarCraft, the legendary name of the real-time strategy genre, is back on the agenda after a long silence. According to the news by Asya Today, four leading game companies in South Korea have started talks with Blizzard to develop new projects set in the StarCraft universe. The projects of giant names such as NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble and Krafton are currently in the evaluation process. These initiatives indicate that Blizzard still maintains its interest in the StarCraft brand.

New Ideas on the Table for the StarCraft Universe

According to the news, the proposals presented to Blizzard are progressing in very different directions. NCSoft, a studio known for MMOs such as Lineage and Guild Wars, has presented an RPG or MMO project set in the StarCraft universe. Nexon, on the other hand, is in the race with an idea that will bring a “unique perspective” to the universe. Krafton, as the developer of PUBG, has prepared a project proposal based on its own technical capabilities. Netmarble, on the other hand, stands out with its idea of a StarCraft-themed mobile game.

It is also said that these offers may have been made with a direct invitation from Blizzard. It has been confirmed that some studios went to Blizzard’s headquarters in California and presented their projects face to face. This shows that Blizzard has not completely shelved the StarCraft brand and is open to new creative ideas.

South Korea’s historical connection with the StarCraft brand also makes this process special. Since the period when StarCraft: Brood War exploded in the e-sports scene, South Korea continues to be a market that shows great interest in the series. Although this legacy is continued with StarCraft 2, the expectation for a new game is still strong.

It is not yet known how Blizzard will proceed in this process. It is also known that the company is developing an FPS project set in the StarCraft universe, but the possibility of this game being canceled is not ruled out due to past examples. Although they are only in the idea stage for now, the possibility that these new offers could bring the StarCraft name back to the top of the gaming agenda in the future is exciting.
