Kratos Wants to Meet the Egyptian Gods
God of War: Ragnarok may have concluded its Norse epic in 2022, but Kratos’s story isn’t over yet. Santa Monica is rumored to be working on a new game, and all the arrows point to the same destination: Egypt. Players’ question, “Will Kratos be fighting Egyptian gods this time?” has been reignited by recent announcements.
Rumors of Kratos Encountering Egyptian Gods Reinforce
Rumors of a new installment in the God of War series have been circulating for some time. Egypt has been rumored as Santa Monica’s next destination, and the idea isn’t entirely new. Plans for Egypt were even on the table for the 2018 reboot, but it was shelved because it was deemed “too intense.” Now, the studio appears to have revived the idea.
Series director Cory Barlog suggested years ago that the sequels could explore Egyptian or Mayan mythology. Christopher Judge, who recently voiced Kratos, further fueled anticipation with a statement at MCM London Comic Con. “I would like Kratos to explore the deserts of Egypt,” Judge said, adding that while the team may not have made their decision yet, they clearly wanted to see such a game.
Judge’s statements revived long-standing Egypt theories. In fact, the series has always harbored hints of Egypt. The first game’s novel depicts Ares spreading fear and destruction in Egypt. The shape of the Blade of Artemis wielded by Kratos is even compared to the Khopesh sword favored by the Egyptians. Even these small details suggest that Santa Monica has been keeping the Egyptian idea in mind for years.
In the “Fallen God” comic, Kratos travels through Egypt before traveling to Midgard and encounters the god Thoth. The Ankh symbol found in Ragnarok is also called the “River Empire”—a clear Egyptian reference. The game’s codex also states that Egyptian gods are “both ancient and technologically advanced” and “ruled with wisdom and humility.”
Even series creator David Jaffe revealed that he planned a scene for God of War 3 where the Sphinx was frozen by Medusa. The game was even set to end with the birth of Jesus. With all these references combined, the possibility of Santa Monica’s Egyptian setting seems quite high. Rumors even suggest that Kratos will wield an “Egyptian sword” in the new game.
