Larian Studios’ Next Project Might be Revealed
According to the recently shared evidence, Larian Studios’ next project may be a current gen console version of Divinity: Original Sin 2.
Good News from Larian Studios to Divinity: Original Sin 2 Fans
Back in April 2024, the Baldur’s Gate 3 developer announced that it had started working on two new games based on original IPs. Both were described as being in the early stages of development at the time, with the studio promising to share more details about them once it has something to show.
But it seems that Larian is currently also pursuing at least one other project, as indicated by the fact that Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition just received a new PEGI rating. The classification, originally spotted by Gematsu, was published on November 6, with its biggest novelty compared to the game’s earlier rating being the mention of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Both can already run the last gen versions of the RPG thanks to their backward compatibility, but neither have yet received dedicated ports of Divinity: Original Sin 2.
While the PEGI database entry also mentions the PC version of the game, this is most likely because the new rating got consolidated with the existing one. After all, Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is already available on PC, where it launched in August 2018, along with its PlayStation and Xbox ports. The improved version of the RPG was given away to all owners of the PC original, which hit the market a year earlier.
Given how Baldur’s Gate 3 propelled Larian to new heights, re-releasing Divinity: Original Sin 2 for current-gen platforms might help the company bring it to an entirely new audience now that its brand is at an all-time high. This newly leaked version of the game hence seems like a relatively low-risk, high-reward move for the Belgian studio. One thing that remains to be seen is what kind of improvements Larian might offer on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For reference, the last-gen consoles already run the game at 4K, with the Xbox One X doing that natively, while the PS4 Pro upscales the RPG to a so called checkerboard 4K resolution. However, both consoles only run Divinity: Original Sin 2 at 30 frames per second.
