Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke talked about Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC and sequel. It’s been revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 will not receive any expansions, DLC, or a sequel. Instead, Larian is pivoting away from the Baldur’s Gate 3 universe to something new.
Sad News for People Who Wants to See Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC
Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of popular and successful games of 2023 and clearly it will also keep it’s popularity in 2024 since company has also announced official mod support for the game. This popularity has also brings expactations with it. But during a presentation at GDC, Vincke announced that Larian is moving on from the Baldur’s Gate franchise. He said that a Baldur’s Gate 4 is still possible, but it won’t be developed by his studio.
The franchise’s future is controlled by Dungeons and Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast, which will choose the developer to lead Baldur’s Gate 4 should it wish to. Vincke did not reveal what Larian’s next project would be, but some are speculating it could be returning to the popular Divinity series. The Larian CEO admitted that this news probably came as a surprise to most fans, who assumed that the studio would continue with post launch content after the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Larian is still releasing support patches for Baldur’s Gate 3 and has intermittently released minor content updates that have added features like new animations, modes, and an epilogue. It’s unclear how long Larian plans to support Baldur’s Gate 3, but it will likely continue to receive hotfix updates going into the future, especially if the game maintains its large player base. But it’s safe to say that after this announcement, we won’t be getting Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC.
Larian is currently working on Baldur’s Gate 3 official mod support, if it will be successful, then this mod support will most likely extend the lifetime of Baldur’s Gate 3, similar to Skyrim. Which has a massive library of mods and these mods kept the activity of the game.
Back in November, Vincke hinted that Larian’s next big game is already in the works, and recently said that its first act is planned out. Maybe it’s Divinity maybe another game, we will see that in time.
