Last Samurai Standing Trailer Released

Netflix has finally released the first trailer for the long-awaited Japanese series Last Samurai Standing. Adapted from Shogo Imamura’s Ikusagami novels, the series stands out with both its historical atmosphere and strong cast. The series’ release date has been announced, and new cast members have also been announced.

Last Samurai Standing Reaches Netflix

Last Samurai Standing takes viewers back to the Meiji period in late 19th-century Japan. The story centers on Shujiro Saga, a man desperately struggling to save his ailing wife and child. Shujiro, played by Junichi Okada, competes for the grand prize of 100 billion yen in a deadly tournament featuring 291 warriors. Blending historical elements with intense action scenes, the series aims to introduce Japanese culture to global audiences.

Series creator Shogo Imamura expressed his joy at the Netflix collaboration. “When I was writing Ikusagami, I envisioned a historical novel that could be read worldwide. I was thrilled to receive the offer from Netflix. I always had Junichi Okada in mind when I wrote Shujiro, and now it’s my dream to have him take on this role,” he shared his excitement. These statements highlight how special the project is for both the author and fans.

Last Samurai Standing is directed by Michihito Fujii, Kento Yamaguchi, and Toru Yamamoto. Junichi Okada, who stars in the lead role, also serves as producer, providing a dual contribution to the project. This is noteworthy because it adds a special depth to the series’ protagonist. Having these strong actors supporting the production further raises expectations.

The series, which has expanded its cast, also features new actors. Veteran actors such as Gaku Hamada, Tetsushi Tanaka, Arata Iura, Taiiku Okazaki, and Ayumu Nakajima have joined the story in various roles. This allows for a more powerful portrayal of both the political atmosphere and dramatic structure of the period. The six-episode series will premiere at the Busan International Film Festival on September 18, 2025. It will then premiere globally on Netflix on November 13.
