Live Service Sci-Fi Game Wildgate Announced

While live-service games still have their giants, Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime has entered the game with a new challenge: Wildgate. Developed by Moonshot Games, a division of Dreamhaven, this space-themed team-based FPS invites players to compete as “prospectors,” or space explorers. Released simultaneously for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5, the game aims to become a permanent fixture in the gaming world.

Wildgate Will Offer a Team-Based FPS Experience for Sci-Fi Fans

In Wildgate, players’ primary objective is to retrieve a mysterious artifact, reach the base, or eliminate all opposing teams. With its colorful alien characters, humorous narrative, and dynamic gameplay, it takes a different path from traditional space-themed games. Following positive feedback from the game’s beta, the developer has decided to leave early access.

Mike Morhaime emphasized during the game’s launch that Wildgate aims to offer more than just a game, but an experience that encourages imagination. The Dreamhaven team also shared plans for regular updates and seasonal content to ensure the game’s longevity. Bi-weekly patches, mid-season improvements, and special events aim to increase player engagement.

It was announced that the paid content offered in the game will be exclusively cosmetic and optional. This ensures fair competition for players. Considering the live service genre has recently experienced turmoil, Wildgate’s approach can be interpreted as player-friendly. The return of games like Splitgate 2 to beta and the rapid closure of some titles epitomize this challenging environment.

Nevertheless, long-lived games like Fortnite, GTA 5, and Roblox prove that this model remains successful. Whether Wildgate will also make it onto this list remains to be seen. However, based on initial impressions, Dreamhaven is determined to move forward on the right path.
