Masters of Albion Will Be the End of an Era

Peter Molyneux, one of the most controversial figures in gaming history, is breaking his years-long silence with Masters of Albion. Known for cult series like Fable and Black & White, Molyneux aims to both atone for his past mistakes and make a meaningful departure for his career.

Masters of Albion Will Be Molyneux’s “Redemption Game”

Peter Molyneux drew attention to Masters of Albion by saying, “This is my redemption game.” The renowned developer recalled the promises he made over the years but never kept, emphasizing that this project was a personal turning point for him. “I overdid some things, I didn’t deliver on some promises, but at the time, I thought I did the right thing,” Molyneux said, also announcing that this game would be his final project.

Molyneux’s statement also brought back into the spotlight one of his most controversial past projects, Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube?. Released in 2012, this experimental mobile game promised the winner a “life-changing prize.” However, the winner was denied the promised prize due to the unprofitability of another project he was involved with, Godus. This incident marked a turning point in Molyneux’s career.

The renowned developer has also generated controversy in recent years with his work on NFT-based games. His game Legacy, in particular, was labeled a failure despite its $54 million NFT sales, culminating in Molyneux’s statement that “crypto games are a completely flawed idea.” This admission strongly suggests that Masters of Albion will steer clear of NFTs or similar systems.

Masters of Albion, which has yet to be released, is being developed by 22cans for PC and consoles. With this game, Molyneux wants to send a message not only to the players but also to his own past: “I’ll do the right thing this time.” If he keeps his word, Masters of Albion could go down in history not just as a game, but as the closing point of a career.
