Mortal Kombat 1 Becomes Best-Selling Fighting Game
Mortal Kombat 1 achieved great success in the fighting game world, selling over six million copies, surpassing rivals Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. Series creator Ed Boon emphasized that despite this success, the game’s extensive content support has officially ended, but that they have not abandoned their goal of providing a balanced gaming experience. Thanks to the strong player response, Mortal Kombat 1 quickly became the best-selling fighting game of the year, but it still surpassed the total sales of its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11.
Mortal Kombat 1 Reaches Top Sales
NetherRealm Studios announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has sold 6.2 million copies in its short time. This figure exceeds the five million sales achieved by Street Fighter 6 two months prior and the three million sales achieved by Tekken 8 five months prior. The Mortal Kombat brand’s broad appeal has steadily driven the game’s sales charts since its release.
Boon solicited player feedback on balance updates in a social media post. Asking, “Which four characters do you think need buffs and which ones need the least support?”, Boon stated that they would continue to support the game with small, balance-focused patches rather than additional content.
Mortal Kombat 1’s official content support ended in almost 21 months. This period is shorter than the two-year content period of its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11. By comparison, Street Fighter 5 received major updates for six years, and Tekken 7 for four years. This led some fans to criticize the game’s inadequate support period.
NetherRealm maintains that this process was planned and that the studio is focusing on new projects. However, Ed Boon’s statements suggest that Mortal Kombat 1 will remain playable for a long time with balance updates for its existing player base. This approach could ensure that both competitive and casual players continue to enjoy the game.
