MSI Preparing RTX 5080 With 24GB VRAM
MSI has drawn attention by showing a version of the GeForce RTX 5080 with 24GB of VRAM on the VGA compatibility list of its X870 Tomahawk Wi-Fi motherboard. This model, which NVIDIA has not yet announced, was listed alongside other RTX 50-series GPUs listed by MSI. Interestingly, the RTX 5080, which is expected to come with 16GB of VRAM by default, is not listed with this capacity. This raises the question of whether MSI is preparing for the 24GB RTX 5080 or whether this is a mistake.
MSI RTX 5080 24GB VRAM: Real or Mistake?
NVIDIA’s partner companies generally cannot change the technical specifications of their GPUs and must adhere to the standards set by NVIDIA. However, the model that is on MSI’s compatibility list does raise the possibility that NVIDIA may be working on a variant with 24GB VRAM for the RTX 5080. This capacity is possible using 3GB GDDR7 memory modules. The RTX 50 series GPUs currently use 2GB modules, but if NVIDIA changes this configuration, models with 24GB memory could become possible.
Other RTX 50-series cards on the list include the RTX 5090, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070. However, the absence of the default 16GB version of the RTX 5080 raises the possibility that the 24GB model is a typo.
24GB of VRAM could be a huge advantage for professionals who use memory-intensive applications, but the impact of this capacity may be limited in the gaming world. However, if NVIDIA releases variants such as SUPER or Ti for the RTX 5080, such a memory configuration could make more sense.
The 24GB VRAM version of the RTX 5080 is currently only listed by MSI. It remains to be seen whether this model is real or not until NVIDIA or MSI makes an official statement. However, this listing hints that NVIDIA may offer different variants of the RTX 5080 in the future. All eyes are now on what NVIDIA and MSI will say on the matter.
