Neil Druckmann Leaves The Last of Us Series
The second season of The Last of Us has ended, and with it, Neil Druckmann’s tenure in production has come to an end. The new episodes of the series, which HBO has approved for a third season, will focus on the character Abby. However, there is a major change in the creative team: Druckmann will no longer be involved in the project.
The Last of Us Will Now Continue Without Druckmann
Neil Druckmann announced that he is stepping down from his creative duties on the series. In a statement he made after the completion of the second season, he stated that he wanted to focus on his responsibilities at the Naughty Dog studio and new projects. The first of these projects is the new game “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” which he both wrote and directed.
Druckmann will also continue his work as Naughty Dog’s president and creative leader. Regarding another secret game project in development, he stated that he only serves as a producer and guides the team. This statement suggests that the studio may be on the agenda for more than one major game project in the near future.
Although the second season of the series increased the popularity of the game again, there was a serious drop in viewership. The season finale lost 4.5 million viewers, down 55 percent from the first episode. Despite this, HBO has approved a third season of the series, and Kaitlyn Dever will continue her role in the new episodes that will focus on the character of Abby. Although Druckmann’s departure from the project raises some questions about the future of the series, it is understood that Naughty Dog is entering an intensive production process on the game side.
