Netflix Is Finally Launching Its Assassin’s Creed Series

Announced in 2020 but long quiet, the Assassin’s Creed series is finally making progress on Netflix’s content calendar. Adapted from Ubisoft’s iconic game series, the series is project led by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, known for their work on Westworld and Halo. The duo will serve as creators, executive producers, and showrunners.

What Themes Will the Assassin’s Creed Series Focus On?

Patino and Wiener describe the series not only as an action or historical journey, but also as a story about human nature. According to the duo, Assassin’s Creed will explore themes such as power, revenge, violence, sex, and greed, as well as human questions of identity, destiny, and faith. It also aims to explore the interconnectedness of people across time and cultures, and what humanity would lose if these connections were severed.

According to Netflix, the series will focus on the shadowy war between two opposing factions to shape humanity’s fate. This conflict will unfold between those who seek to preserve free will and those who seek to control humanity’s future. At the heart of the story will be the characters’ personal journeys shaped by historical events.

The series’ creative team includes not only Patino and Wiener, but also Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill from Ubisoft’s Film and Television division. Working together with Netflix, the team believes the series will be a powerful and compelling production for both loyal fans and new viewers.

The project has some challenges in its past. Die Hard writer Jeb Stuart was previously attached to the project but left in 2023 due to creative differences. Furthermore, an Assassin’s Creed anime, announced in 2017, was shelved. Considering all this past experience, this new venture stands as the most serious step toward a screen adaptation of the series.
