Over 30 Million Sold Cyberpunk 2077 Animation Project Announced
This follows the news that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 30 million copies and that the sequel will go into full development after The Witcher 4 (Project Polaris) is completed. No animation studio has yet been announced for the new Cyberpunk animation, and it’s unclear whether Studio TRIGGER, which produced Edgerunners, will continue. But expect it to be full of impressive visuals, cool technology and plenty of gore.
Cyberpunk 2077 has become more iconic for its name than its gameplay. Since its initial announcement in 2013, players have waited patiently for years for more details. Expectations peaked with the re-announcement at E3 2018 and the announcement that Keanu Reeves would be joining the cast as Johnny Silverhand.
But when it launched in December 2020, it became clear that the game wasn’t ready to go at all. Game-breaking bugs and frequent graphical glitches made the game unplayable for some. Over time, as patches were completed and the situation improved, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners spin-off series.
Created by the acclaimed Studio TRIGGER, the makers of Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann, Edgerunners followed promising young David Martinez through the dark and crime-ridden Night City. A hit with gaming fans and others alike, the series won numerous awards, including Animation of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Despite this success, it looks like there will be no season 2 of the new project Edgerunners.
However, thanks to the success of Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a huge increase in player numbers, with 1 million people entering Night City after the anime. So with a new Cyberpunk project, a sequel and a live-action movie on the way, this could be another way for the series to reach the heights it was originally aiming for.
