New Details From Cancelled Ultimate Spider-Man 2

Developed in the mid-2000s but never seeing the light of day, Ultimate Spider-Man 2 is back on the agenda after many years. Developer Ian Hosfield, who also worked on the first game in the series, shared striking details about the canceled sequel. This project, which seemed quite ambitious during the production phase, was actually designed to include many familiar characters from the Marvel universe.

Ultimate Spider-Man 2 Would Offer a Broad Story and Cast

The game’s main story was based on the “Death of a Goblin” comic book. This time, Green Goblin would be one of the playable characters, and his goal was to save his son Harry Osborn from the government. Just like Venom’s story in the first game, which was connected to Peter Parker, this narrative was also designed to progress in parallel. The Green Goblin’s story would have a darker and unconventional tone.

According to the published concept art, Doctor Doom would also have a brief role in the game. In addition, characters such as Daredevil and The Hand would be included in the story for a short time. Peter Parker’s love interest in the comics, Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), would be a supporting character in the game. Wolverine would appear more prominently this time after his brief appearance in the first game.

Ultimate Spider-Man 2’s gameplay area would offer an expanded New York City. The entirety of Queens and Brooklyn would be included in the map, and areas such as Coney Island would be exploreable. The city design was more detailed, and the neighborhoods were designed with a more vibrant atmosphere. This expansion would significantly deepen the open-world experience compared to the series.

The game’s development process was carried out by Treyarch, while the publisher would again be Activision. However, the project was canceled due to the low sales performance of the first game. Developer Chris Salazar stated that Activision did not invest enough in promotion at the time, and therefore sales were weak. Emphasizing that no sales were expected because no promotion was done, and that no promotion was done because no sales were expected, Salazar likened this process to the “chicken-egg” dilemma. Criticism that Activision did not make long-term plans also drew attention.
