New Development About Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4 Movie
The long-rumored Spider-Man 4 project is back on the agenda. The possibility of Tobey Maguire returning to the iconic Spider-Man role has been renewed with a recent statement from screenwriter Mattson Tomlin. Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman – Part II, stated that his story proposal for a Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire hasn’t been completely rejected.
Spider-Man 4 Still Holds a Small Ray of Hope
Mattson Tomlin answered a fan’s question on X (formerly Twitter). The fan asked, “Is there any progress on your idea for a Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire?” Tomlin replied: “I’m slowly but surely making progress. I won’t be able to talk about it for a long time, maybe ever, because there are so many people, politics, and events that need to happen at the right time. But they still haven’t said ‘no’!”
Tomlin has long expressed his desire to write a more mature Peter Parker story that would continue Sam Raimi’s trilogy. In a July post, the screenwriter stated, “After eight films, I’m leaning towards the idea of a fatherly Spider-Man,” suggesting a Peter Parker who is both heroic and fatherly at the center of the story.
Spider-Man 4 was originally announced as a 2011 film, with Sam Raimi directing and Tobey Maguire returning as Peter Parker. However, due to creative disagreements, Sony canceled the project and launched The Amazing Spider-Man series in 2012 instead.
However, both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have repeatedly stated their openness to returning to this story over the years. In a 2022 interview, Raimi said that Marvel’s multiverse stories prove that “anything is possible.” Maguire, in Spider-Man: No Way Home: The Official Movie Special, once again demonstrated his love for the character, saying, “If someone called and said, ‘Come on tonight, let’s do a little scene,’ my answer would definitely be ‘Yes!'”
Although there’s no official confirmation or production plans, Mattson Tomlin’s statement has reignited hopes for Spider-Man 4. Perhaps one day, that long-awaited story will become a reality, and Tobey Maguire will once again don that iconic mask.
