New Update for The Witcher and Cyberpunk Sequels
CD Projekt Red, the developer behind The Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077, has given a status update on the forthcoming sequels belonging to these two IPs. While the successor to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is being developed under the codename Polaris, the sequel to CDPR’s Cyberpunk game is in development under the codename Orion.
New Status Update for The Witcher and Cyberpunk Sequels
Over the past decade, CDPR has emerged as one of the biggest names in the role-playing game category, thanks to certain highly popular releases. Through 2015’s Game of the Year The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the Polish studio established itself in the industry as a force to be reckoned with. On the other hand, Cyberpunk 2077, from the underwhelming launch in 2020 to the redemption arc led by the Phantom Liberty DLC in 2023, exemplified CDPR’s versatility in the genre. Now, the developer has shared its progress on the next projects in the pipeline.
During its earnings call earlier today, CDPR revealed the progress it has made on certain ongoing projects, giving updates about its much anticipated Polaris and Orion projects. Joint CEO Michal Nowakowski announced that Polaris, the next Witcher game, is close to a “major milestone” that marks the completion of its pre production stage. Additionally, he stated that the devs are getting ready to start “full fledged production” on the Witcher project that is set to be the first entry in a new saga. Moreover, CDPR highlighted that work on Orion, the new Cyberpunk title, has also advanced at its newly founded Boston studio over the past six months. A combined team of longtime CDPR employees and new hires is working on “laying the groundwork” for Orion, according to CFO Piotr Nielubowicz.
CDPR also shared an infographic showing the slight increase in its total team size, from 630 developers to 639 developers, between April 30 and July 31 this year. This ramping up has resulted in some more people joining the work being done on Polaris and Orion. The team size for the new Witcher game has gone up from 407 to 410, whereas the number of people working on Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel is now 60 instead of 56. Interestingly, Sirius, which is the codename for a Witcher spinoff project, has also seen its development team strength go from 39 to 42 during the same period.
The anticipation for both series’ sequels are getting bigger each day. Based on how the developer has directed most of its resources onto these two IPs, fans can rest assured that Polaris and Orion are priorities for CDPR at the moment.
