New Weapons in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdree is shaping up to be a massive DLC and FromSoftware has confirmed that it is the biggest expansion pack yet. You can expect lots of new bosses, a vast open world and a variety of new weapons from the upcoming expansion.

The base game already offered a ton of different weapons, from Greatswords to Axes and more, and Shadow of the Erdtree only adds more to the mix. With that in mind, here are the new weapon types in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdree.

New Weapons in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree New Weapons Types

  • Big Katana
  • Large Light Swords
  • Hand-to-Hand
  • Throwing Weapons
  • Thrusting Shields
  • Reverse-hand Swords
  • Perfume Bottles
  • Beast Claws

Based on the pre-release gameplay footage of Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, we can make an assessment of what these weapon types actually are.

Oversized Light Swords
Oversized light swords offer a nice middle ground between regular Greatswords and Upright Swords, giving you the maneuverability of the latter and the damage output closer to the former. Oversized light swords come with faster movement sets than regular Greatswords.

Reverse Hand Swords
Reversed Hand Swords are exactly what they look like. They are swords held upside down from the hilt and can be used for slashing attacks. Some Reversed Hand Swords are ambidextrous and can be split into twin swords. These weapons have really fast combos and are great for creating status effects.

Big Katanas
The Great Katanas were described by game director Hidetaka Miyazaki as “pretty classic big Japanese katanas” and, unsurprisingly, that’s exactly what they are. These Katanas are significantly larger than those found in the base game and are quite powerful in terms of damage. Due to their size, attacks are slower and you lose the speed that regular Katanas like the Uchigatana provide.

Throwing Weapons
Throwing Weapons are small axes and knives that you can use with both hands to throw at your enemies. They have a different move set that allows you to keep attacking. There is minimal lag between each throw, so you can keep spamming them.

Dryleaf Arts
There has been much curiosity about the new Hand-to-Hand weapon type since it was shown in the expansion’s reveal trailer. This weapon type is called Dryleaf Arts in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree and is named after the spiritual seekers known as the Dryleaf Sect. The weapon is a martial art with a moveset of quick punches and kicks that result in flashy combos.

Repulsor Shields
Thruster Shields allow you to attack and defend at the same time. As the name suggests, you can perform thrust attacks with these weapons. Still, it’s hard to say how effective they will be in battle.

Monster Claws
Monster Claws are two-handed melee weapons that come with a ferocious-looking attack chain. They offer excellent mobility, with the Tainted leaping towards enemies and landing hit after hit. The weapon is unlikely to deal a lot of Vitality damage, so you’ll be vulnerable to counterattacks, but there’s a good chance you’ll get a status effect before that happens.

Perfume Bottles
Perfume Vials refer to the poisons and potions used by the Perfumer enemy type in the Ring of the Hand. This type of weapon can be wielded with one hand and Tarnished can throw them, dealing status effect damage.
