New World Falls Victim to Amazon’s Layoffs
New World, released by Amazon Games on PC in 2021 and consoles in 2024, was once seen as the rebirth of the MMORPG genre. However, the studio announced that they would no longer produce new content with the latest update. According to the team, the game is no longer sustainable and supporting it is no longer economically viable. The Nighthaven update will be the final content pack for New World.
New World Will Keep Its Servers Up Until 2026
The announcement revealed that the development team was disbanded following Season 10 and the Nighthaven update. Amazon’s wave of layoffs, affecting 14,000 people, directly hit the studio. Many of the teams working on the MMO projects lost their jobs during this period. Consequently, plans for New World’s future were also canceled.
The studio stated that the game servers will remain open until 2026. Players will continue to have access to existing content during this time. It was also announced that Nighthaven and Rise of the Angry Earth add-ons have been made free on PC. For console players, the game will still be included in the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra packages.
The development team stated that they released regular content updates for four years, and that the game has remained afloat thanks to the support of the players. However, they emphasized that the resources needed to produce new content are no longer available. The team thanked the community for their patience and support.
New World was considered Amazon Games’ first major success in the gaming industry. However, the company’s restructuring process prevented the studio from maintaining this momentum. This development, disappointing for MMO fans, also leaves Amazon’s future in the gaming industry uncertain. It appears that the adventure in Aeternum is about to be lost.
