No Call of Duty Game Is Good After 2017
Glen Schofield, who has directed three different games in the Call of Duty series, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the quality of recent releases. Schofield stated that none of the games released since 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII have been “good,” and that the series has strayed from its former form.
Glen Schofield: “Call of Duty Isn’t the Same Anymore”
Schofield stated that the quality of Call of Duty games released since his departure from Activision has declined significantly. “The games that have come out since I left Sledgehammer haven’t been very good,” the renowned producer said. “The last one [Modern Warfare 3 (2023)] was an average 50-point game.” Schofield added that the games still sell well but are no longer as impressive as they once were.
Schofield’s criticisms also point to the series’ sustained production pace over the years. The Call of Duty series, which releases a new game every year, consistently tops the charts despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. Schofield stated, “It doesn’t feel the same anymore. Treyarch still does good work, but there’s no excitement like it used to,” and emphasized the series’ shift in direction.
The veteran director recalled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011) as the series’ “golden age.” That year, the game was named “Action Game of the Year” at the DICE Awards. According to Schofield, the team at Activision at the time was a “dream team,” and the innovative ideas developed during that period laid the foundation for these successes.
Despite harsh criticism, the Call of Duty franchise continues to break sales records. Most recently, Black Ops 6 earned the series the title of best-selling game of the year in the US for the 16th consecutive year. Schofield’s criticisms have reignited the “relapse” debate that players have been raising for a long time.
