NVIDIA GTX 970 Legend Returns with 8GB Mod
When it comes to upgrading a graphics card, replacing an old model with a new one often comes to mind. However, this time, an old model was brought back to life with a different method. The NVIDIA GTX 970 experienced a remarkable performance increase by increasing its VRAM from 4GB to 8GB thanks to a special mod. This development brought the long-forgotten potential of the card back to the agenda.
NVIDIA GTX 970 Back on the Agenda with Modification
Behind this impressive transformation is Brazilian modder Paulo Gomes. Gomes first removed all 512MB memory modules on the GTX 970 and replaced them with 1GB modules. However, this hardware change alone was not enough. In order for the card to recognize the new memory, the resistors on the GPU had to be rearranged. Thanks to this, the system was able to detect the card as having 8192MB VRAM.
The success of the developed mod was also demonstrated by the benchmark tests. While the stock 4GB GTX 970 model scored 866 points in the Superposition Benchmark test, the modified 8GB version reached exactly 1576 points. In other words, with a score that almost doubled, the card seriously surpassed its original performance.
The most striking part of this rise was that the modded GTX 970 took the lead when compared to the GTX 1060 6GB model. While the GTX 1060 scored 1575 points in the same test, the modded GTX 970 managed to beat it by one point. This proved that a card released years ago can be brought to a level where it can compete with today’s models.
The GTX 970 caused great controversy with its VRAM structure at the time, and even caused NVIDIA to react because of it. However, this mod shows how strong the card still is and that it can regain its value with appropriate interventions. Especially for nostalgia buffs and hardware enthusiasts, projects like these prove that old hardware still works.
