Physics-Based Action Game Rootbound Announced for PC

German game studio Brainlag Games has introduced its new physics-based action-adventure game Rootbound. Developed by a team of former Piranha Bytes developers, the game is about a plantling’s adventure to stop a mysterious disease. Rootbound will meet players on Steam in 2026.

About Rootbound

The game’s story is about the main character, a plantling, fighting a mysterious “blight” disease that threatens his home. While exploring this forgotten world, players will uncover the secrets of an ancient civilization, solve puzzles, and encounter dangerous creatures. Another striking element of the game will be the “thinking backpack” that accompanies the main character. This backpack will help the player by throwing the items it collects, but it can sometimes make things difficult because it has a structure that can make its own decisions. Here are some of the game’s prominent features:

A Handcrafted World: Players will explore a handcrafted island called Akara to learn about the lost technology of an ancient civilization. By solving puzzles, it will be possible to obtain powerful weapons and valuable upgrades.

Living Backpack: The backpack will not only carry items, but will also play an important role as a character that helps the player. However, enemies can also notice this living bag and direct their attacks towards it.

Crystals and Campsites: Crystals found in Akara will be used to set up camp and make torches. While the campsites allow players to rest, the torches will illuminate dark areas and provide magical powers.

Dangerous Rain: Traveling at night carries great risk due to the mysterious disease brought by the rain. It will be quite dangerous to continue on the road without torches and camp lights.

Rootbound will be available for PC users via Steam in 2026. Brainlag Games aims to offer players both a world full of puzzles and physics-based combat mechanics. The first trailer and screenshots of the game have already attracted great attention. For adventure, action and puzzle lovers, Rootbound stands out as a production that should be followed carefully.
