Planescape: Torment Gives Up Due to Lack of Money

The sequel to Planescape: Torment, one of the iconic role-playing games, was actually much closer than you might think. In 2016, Beamdog studio began extensive work on a new game set in the Planescape universe. However, when publisher support could not be obtained, the creative team was forced to stop the project despite all preparations.

Planescape: Torment Sequel Plans Fail to Find Support

This new project that Beamdog was working on was called Planescape: Unraveled. The game was set in the world of the original game and featured players controlling one of the three aspects of the character Ravel Puzzlewell and discovering their own existence. Experienced names such as David Gaider and Chris Avellone were involved in the project, and Wizards of the Coast even considered integrating this content into the new edition of Planescape, confident in the game’s potential.

Despite all the creative support, however, funding was not found. According to Gaider, some publishers thought the Planescape universe was not commercially attractive. Some were hesitant about Beamdog’s experience developing an original game. These uncertainties led to Planescape: Unraveled being shelved.

The fact that Beamdog was known only for classic RPG remasters at the time may have increased these doubts. It is known that the company tried to bring its own original projects to life but had difficulty gaining publisher trust. Gaider left the studio after taking on another canceled project during this process and founded Summerfall Studios.

Although this sequel was not realized, Planescape: Torment is still a production that many gamers will not forget. After successful examples such as Baldur’s Gate 3, the possibility of another studio reviving this universe is still on the table.
