PlayStation 2 Is Still the King of Gaming After 25 Years

As of October 26, 2025, the PlayStation 2 is 25 years old. But this console isn’t just a technological marvel; it’s a symbol of one of gaming culture’s most vibrant eras. With over 155 million units sold, the PS2 remains the “best-selling console of all time.” With its diverse gameplay, the spirit it injected into games, and its vision that pushed the boundaries of its era, it remains a legend.

The PlayStation 2 Defined the Golden Age of Gaming

At its launch, the PS2 offered a far broader selection of games than its competitors, the Nintendo GameCube and Xbox. The global phenomenon of the Grand Theft Auto series, the birth of Kingdom Hearts, and the rise of Persona to popularity in the West all coincided with this era. These games, each spanning a diverse genre, formed the foundation of the PS2’s “everyone-friendly” library.

Not only popular titles but also extraordinary games found their way onto this platform. Dark psychological horrors like Rule of Rose, poetic narratives like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, and absurd yet captivating experiences like Katamari Damacy proved the creative potential of the PS2 era. Even today, these games continue to inspire modern franchises like The Last of Us and God of War (2018).

The PS2’s strength lay not only in its technology but also in its accessibility. Over time, the console’s price dropped, making it accessible to nearly every home. This created a “shared gaming platform” for both children and adults. In this era, when online gaming was still in its infancy, games were purer, more intimate, and more focused on creativity. Even early online games like Final Fantasy XI and Phantasy Star Online captured the essence of gaming, free from today’s microtransaction systems.

Furthermore, the PS2 not only played games but also functioned as a DVD player. This made it a cultural phenomenon as an “all-in-one” device even in countries without access to technology. Modified PS2s are still actively used, particularly in markets like Brazil, India, and Turkey.

While today’s gaming world is overflowing with graphical realism and online live services, the PS2 era represented something entirely different: experimentation. Games back then were riskier, more whimsical, yet equally original. The PS2’s legacy still embodies a sense of freedom that newer-generation consoles struggle to match.
