PlayStation 5 Sales Surpass 80 Million
As fierce competition continues in the game console world, the PlayStation 5 has once again captured the attention. Sony’s latest sales figures reveal the PS5’s momentum and strong user presence. Growth in hardware, software, and online services, in particular, further solidifies the console’s position in the market. The newly released data demonstrates not only its sales success but also the overall growth trajectory of the PlayStation brand.
PlayStation 5 Follows the PS4’s Footsteps
According to Sony’s first quarter 2025 financial report, PlayStation 5 total sales reached 80.3 million units. This figure represents the console’s cumulative sales since its launch in November 2020. Despite supply issues and economic fluctuations following the pandemic, the PS5’s success in achieving this level demonstrates the platform’s strong user interest.
In the first quarter of 2025, 2.5 million PS5 units were sold. This figure represents a slight increase compared to the 2.4 million sales reported in the same period last year. However, the most striking increase occurred in the software sector. Total game sales for the PS4 and PS5 platforms reached 65.9 million copies, significantly exceeding the 53.6 million sales last year.
The same report also shared user data for the PlayStation Plus service. Active users rose from 116 million in the first quarter of 2024 to 123 million this year. DLC revenue also increased, generating 292.6 billion yen. These figures demonstrate strong growth for the platform not only in hardware but also in software and services.
The PS5’s total sales figure closely matches the early performance of the previous-generation console, the PS4. All of this data demonstrates Sony’s continued stability in the gaming sector and its continued leadership of the PlayStation brand.
