PlayStation 6’s Possible Hardware Leaked
Although not yet officially unveiled, hardware information believed to be related to the PlayStation 6 has leaked. The next-generation APU, developed by AMD and codenamed “Magnus,” features striking technical details. Critical aspects such as graphics power and memory bus speeds, in particular, suggest the PlayStation 6 will make significant strides in performance.
The PlayStation 6 APU Is Being Codenamed Magnus
According to information shared in a new YouTube video, AMD’s APU, dubbed “Magnus,” stands out with its 384-bit memory bus and large 264 mm² graphics chip. This provides ample space beyond current-generation consoles. The processor features an unusual architecture consisting of three Zen 6 cores and eight Zen 6C cores. Furthermore, the absence of low-power cores suggests this chip is designed for gaming-focused systems.
The Magnus APU is listed in AMD’s semi-custom solutions division. This division previously housed the “Mero” APU on the Steam Deck and the “Jupiter” APU, which is thought to be for the PlayStation portable console. This similarity suggests that Magnus may also be being developed for Sony’s next-generation console, the PlayStation 6. However, some sources suggest that Magnus’s large chip size and high memory bus also suggest that this APU could be for the Xbox side.
Regarding RAM, the PlayStation 6 is expected to offer higher capacity than current systems. Digital Foundry indicates that the next-generation console could feature 24GB of RAM, which is particularly necessary for artificial intelligence and advanced ray tracing technologies. High DRAM costs may prevent significant advances in this area. The portable console, expected to launch alongside the PlayStation 6, will come with 16GB of RAM, making a 24GB RAM amount more logical for developers to target both systems.
Forecasts for the next-generation Xbox are more uncertain. It’s rumored that Microsoft may lean more toward the “PC-in-a-box” concept, a pre-configured gaming computer, rather than a traditional console. This could lead to an Xbox system that could technically surpass the PlayStation 6. However, the cost of such a device could limit competition in the console market.
The PlayStation 6 is expected to be unveiled in the coming years. However, one of the main concerns is whether the rumored PlayStation portable, which will supposedly run PS5 games natively, will also be released alongside the console. This portable system is claimed to be even more powerful than the Xbox Series S.
