PlayStation Focuses on Live Service
PlayStation has had a period full of both successes and failures in 2024. Helldivers 2, in particular, stood out as one of the most successful live service games of the year. However, despite the failure of Concord, which was a major disappointment in the same year, PlayStation’s commitment to live service games continues. PlayStation’s co-CEO Herman Hulst announced that such games will continue to have an important place in the company’s strategy in the future.
The Importance of Helldivers 2 for PlayStation
Helldivers 2 was a major turning point for PlayStation. It reached a large player base thanks to continuous content updates and game mechanics that attracted players’ attention. Hulst stated that this success showed the potential of live service games and that it will strengthen PlayStation’s investments in this area.
In an interview with Famitsu, Hulst said that people are still hungry for “great entertainment experiences” and that these types of games offer a sustainable business model for PlayStation. The success of Helldivers 2 stands out as the strongest evidence supporting this approach.
Although the Concord game was a huge failure and was even pulled from the market, PlayStation does not see this as an obstacle. Hulst emphasized that they learned from the results of Concord, but that live service games still have an important place in the company’s strategy. He also said that PlayStation will continue to develop both story-driven single-player games and live service games.
PlayStation’s interest in live service games is not limited to the success of Helldivers 2. The company aims to reach a wider audience with such games in the future. It plans to increase the variety of such games in order to both satisfy the existing player base and reach new audiences.
