PlayStation Store Announces Steam-Like Feature
Sony is taking the PlayStation Store experience a step further. The long-awaited written review system was added to the store this week. Now, players can not only rate games out of 5 stars but also write their own reviews. The new system aims to provide players with more guidance in making purchasing decisions, much like user reviews on Steam.
The PlayStation Store Has Transitioned to a Steam-Style Review Era
The new feature has been quietly added to the PS Store. Players can now write reviews of their purchased games, up to 4,000 characters long, and can also specify the edition they’re reviewing (e.g., “Digital Deluxe Edition”). This feature is a significant improvement, as it clarifies exactly which edition users are talking about.
This system, familiar to Steam users for years, has now found its way into the PlayStation ecosystem. Sony aims to make the PlayStation Store more transparent and interactive by taking community feedback into account. This means users looking to buy a new game will now be able to directly review other players’ experiences, not just the star rating.
However, the system also carries risks. While Sony has stated that users can add spoiler warnings to their reviews, there are concerns that not everyone will use this feature correctly. Furthermore, measures have been taken to address the risk of “review bombing,” a well-known internet problem. To leave a review, the game must have been purchased or downloaded through PlayStation Plus.
Currently, written reviews can only be viewed on the web version of the PlayStation Store. This feature is not yet active in the store interfaces on PS5 and PS4, but Sony is expected to implement it with a system update in the future.
With this innovation, the PlayStation Store is entering a period that further emphasizes the voices of the gaming community. Now, every star will have a story behind it, and every game will have a player opinion behind it — just like on Steam.
