Why Was The Last of Us Online Canceled?

The Last of Us Online, planned as the multiplayer component of The Last of Us Part II, was known as “Factions” for a long time. However, Naughty Dog decided to stop the project due to the difficulties in developing live service games. It was stated that after consulting with Bungie about live service games, Naughty Dog decided that it could not continue such a project.

Yoshida stated in his statement that Naughty Dog was eager to develop this project, but the studio changed its priorities in order to use its resources more efficiently. Instead, it was announced that the focus was on the Intergalactic project, which was announced at The Game Awards last year and inspired by anime productions.

Shuhei Yoshida praised The Last of Us Online project, but stated that he has a cautious approach to live service games. Yoshida criticized PlayStation’s decision to focus on live service games, drawing attention to the difficulties of such games. He also reminded that Sony has recently canceled two live service projects.

Although the cancellation of The Last of Us Online has caused disappointment among fans, it seems that Naughty Dog has managed to divert attention in another direction with its new projects. Shuhei Yoshida’s comments on the potential of this project continue to arouse curiosity about the canceled game.
