Primal Season 3 Trailer Released
The Emmy-winning animated series Primal is returning for its third season, surprising fans. The first trailer, released at New York Comic Con 2025, revealed the return of Spear, whom we thought was dead. However, this return is unusual, as Spear is now a zombie! Series creator Genndy Tartakovsky says that “everything will be more intense, more emotional, and more insane” in this season.
Primal Season 3: Spear’s Zombie Return
The trailer for the new season stays true to the series’ roots while also creating a completely different atmosphere. Tartakovsky previously stated that he had planned the third season as an anthology, but changed his mind at the last minute. “I killed off a character people loved for 20 episodes. Then I thought, ‘What if I haven’t finished the story?'” The director decided to continue the story with the Zombie Spear concept. This decision perfectly fits the series’ pulp (adventure-horror hybrid) spirit.
The trailer combines blood, gore, and emotion. Spear returns as a warrior resurrected from the dead, and his world is now much darker. Referencing the zombie dinosaur theme seen in the first season’s “Plague of Madness,” Tartakovsky says, “Immortality already exists in this universe. This is just a step forward.” The director also emphasizes that this season is the proudest of his career in terms of animation quality and story depth.
“We’ve experienced occasional fluctuations in quality with shows like Dexter, The Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack. But with Primal, we’ve maintained incredible consistency across thirty episodes,” Tartakovsky said. He promises this season will be on the same level: “Every episode is solid, every scene is meaningful. We’ve done a great job with a small budget.”
One of the most intriguing aspects of Primal Season 3 is that Spear and Fang’s children will play a significant role in the story. These characters, born in the season 2 finale, now represent a new generation growing up in Spear’s absence. But now, their father’s transformation into a zombie will create a completely different dynamic, both emotionally and in terms of their struggle for survival.
While a definitive release date hasn’t been announced yet, Primal Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Adult Swim and HBO Max in January 2026. The trailer heralds a new epic, one where brutality and emotion intertwine. It appears Genndy Tartakovsky is once again pushing the boundaries of the animation world.
