Prime Video Casts Lead Role for Tomb Raider
The Tomb Raider franchise has been making a name for itself in both the gaming and cinema worlds for years. Now, Prime Video has finally announced the actress who will portray Lara Croft in its long-in-progress series. This decision is seen as a significant turning point in the adaptation’s future.
Sophie Turner to Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Series
Prime Video has officially announced that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner has been cast as Lara Croft. Turner, who will portray the iconic character previously portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, described the responsibility as “exciting but also a huge burden.” The actress stated that she will dedicate all her energy to the character and want to deliver a powerful performance.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the series’ creator. The Fleabag writer is leading the project as both producer and writer. Chad Hodge’s addition as co-showrunner suggests the series will have a strong writing team.
The production team also includes Shogun’s Jonathan Van Tulleken as director. Tulleken’s previous work on Blade Runner 2099 for Prime Video suggests the series will be visually and narratively ambitious. Filming is reportedly set to begin on January 19, 2026, and production will proceed quickly.
Tomb Raider adaptations have previously generated significant buzz both on the big screen and in the gaming world. Jolie’s performance in the 2000s and Vikander’s 2016 rendition are still remembered, and it’s already generating interest in how Turner will approach the role. Thanks to Prime Video’s investment, this production could be the rebirth of Lara Croft in the modern television world.
