PS4 12.52 Update Didn’t Please Everyone

Sony has released a new system update, version 12.52, for PlayStation 4 users. While seemingly ordinary at first glance, this update hasn’t been well-received, particularly by the modding and jailbreaking community. This update targets security vulnerabilities and eliminates some potential for tampering with the system.

What Changes Does PS4 Update 12.52 Bring?

According to Sony’s official statement, the 12.52 update, released on July 9th, only includes “some security fixes.” However, this brief description doesn’t mean the update’s impact is limited. The modding community notes that this update addresses system vulnerabilities and that previous attempts have been largely ineffective.

PS4 12.52 Update Didn't Please Everyone

The PS4 has been repeatedly in the news for its jailbreaking practices in the past. Examples, particularly those involving DriveClub, which restored access to games that had been removed from the store, have demonstrated how this process is used for game preservation. However, Sony reacts quite quickly to such attempts and regularly fixes vulnerabilities.

A similar approach continues on the PS3. An update released in March required the system to be updated to continue using the Blu-ray drive. This demonstrates that Sony maintains security measures even for its older consoles.

It’s worth noting that modding and jailbreaking are considered against Sony’s terms of service. Even if intended to protect games, such practices can lead to the device becoming inoperable or a permanent ban from the PSN. With the 12.52 update, external intervention into the PS4 system has been made more difficult.
