PS5 and PS4 Sales Are Almost at the Same Level
Sony’s latest financial reports show that PS5 sales have decreased compared to the previous year, but the console’s overall performance is strikingly balanced. Sales figures show that the PS5 has been moving at almost the same pace as the PS4 since its launch, while the number of active users of the console is also strong.
PS5 Follows PS4
Sony announced that it sold 2.8 million PS5s in the last quarter. This figure indicates a decrease of 1.7 million units compared to the same period last year. However, the total sales of 77.8 million almost matches the performance of the PS4 in the same period of 79.1 million. In particular, the 9.5 million sales during the last Christmas period were the PS5’s highest quarterly performance to date.
Although sales fell from 20.8 million to 18.5 million on an annual basis, Sony’s games division showed overall growth. Total revenue increased by 9 percent, while operating income increased by 43 percent. This increase was driven by the rise in third-party game sales, while games from Sony-owned studios fell. For example, Astro Bot, which was released in September 2023, sold only 1.5 million copies.
The console’s monthly active users remained at 124 million. Although this number is lower than the record level of 129 million reached in the previous quarter, the increase from last year paints a positive picture. Nevertheless, Sony is predicting a decrease in sales and profit expectations for the next fiscal year. This indicates that PS5 sales have peaked, just like the PS4.
In April, Sony increased the price of the digital PS5 in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Microsoft also increased the prices of its Xbox models in May. Following these developments, it is wondered whether Sony will make a similar price increase for other models.
On the software side, Sony is preparing for a strong year. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be released next month, and Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2. With GTA 6 being delayed to 2026, Ghost of Yotei could be one of the standout productions by the end of the year.
