PS5 Digital Edition Announced With Less Storage
The PlayStation 5 has undergone numerous revisions since its launch. Now, a new version of the Digital Edition is on the agenda. This model, codenamed CFI-2100, has a reduced storage capacity from 1 TB to 825 GB. Furthermore, the price tag will remain unchanged at €499. This decision could be controversial, considering the increasing storage needs of gamers in next-generation games.
New PS5 Digital Edition
According to a report by billbil-kun, a well-known leaker on Dealabs, the new model will go on sale in Europe on September 13, 2025. Sony typically focuses on optimizing production and costs in PS5 revisions. While previous versions have featured minor improvements in cooling and performance, the most notable difference this time around is the reduction in storage capacity.
The first model, released in 2020, featured a built-in disc drive. In 2023, a removable disc drive was introduced with the version dubbed “PS5 Slim” by the community. This design allowed the console to be used both digitally and with discs. It also saved on production and logistics costs.
The reduced storage capacity of the new PS5 Digital Edition, codenamed CFI-2100, could make a practical difference for gamers. With AAA titles reaching over 100GB in size, the 825GB storage capacity could fill up quickly. This could lead gamers to consider external SSD solutions.
Sony’s move also hints at the possibility of a new PS5 version with higher storage capacity once the current 1TB models in stock are depleted. The company is expected to make new hardware improvements in the future to both balance production costs and meet gamers’ expectations.
