PS6 Handheld Console Looks Similar to Nintendo Switch 2
Sony is preparing to return to the handheld console market, after a long period of silence, with the PS6 handheld. Codenamed “Canis,” the device will reportedly function both in portable mode and connect to an external display, much like the Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the first time in years that the PlayStation brand has launched a portable device capable of running games directly, without relying on cloud streaming.
What We Know About the PS6 Handheld
According to initial reports, the Canis will offer backward compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games. The hardware is said to utilize a 16-compute RDNA 5 architecture, operating at 1.20GHz and boosting to 1.65GHz in docked mode. This means the device will offer half the power of the PS5 while offering more balanced performance than its competitors.
The device’s dock will operate via USB-C. This allows the handheld console to connect to TVs or monitors, similar to the Switch 2, providing a desktop experience. According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, the device will also experience a performance boost when docked.
Pricing-wise, Sony is reportedly aiming to keep its new console more affordable than its competitors. Rumors suggest the device could launch at $499, a lower price point. This would make it a direct competitor to both Xbox’s upcoming ASUS handheld console and the Switch 2, which launched at $449.
Although not officially announced, the PS6 handheld is expected to launch alongside the PS6 no earlier than 2027. If the rumors are true, Sony will introduce a brand new portable console, carrying the legacy of the PS Vita, years from now.
