Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser made significant statements about a sequel to the Red Dead Redemption series. Speaking in an interview with Lex Fridman, Houser hinted that he might be lukewarm about the idea of a Red Dead Redemption 3. He believes that Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 already presented a cohesive story that connects, and it’s important to maintain this integrity.
Houser reminded his former studio that the Grand Theft Auto series had developed standalone stories, emphasizing the distinct nature of the Red Dead Redemption universe. The creator noted that the two-game structure, which depicts the downfall of the Van Der Linde gang, offered a complete narrative, but noted that a third game could undermine this emotional integrity. He added that the IP belongs to Rockstar, and the final decision rests with them.
Of course, these statements don’t mean the series is completely over. The possibility of Rockstar revisiting the Red Dead Redemption universe in a different era or with new characters is still on the table. The possibility of a prequel, a narrative based on a different gang, or a brand new character is one of the most frequently discussed scenarios by gamers.
