Rematch Takes Steam by Storm

Described as “Rocket League but on feet,” Rematch made a big splash with its open beta on Steam this weekend. Reaching over 100,000 players at the same time, the game draws attention with its dynamic that brings together sports and competition. The game, which will be sold for $24.99 on Steam and an average of $30 on consoles when it is released, seems to have already caught a serious audience.

Rematch: A Game with Feet on the Ground Following in the Footsteps of Rocket League

Rematch offers a 5v5 or 4v4 multiplayer football experience, but it is not a sports simulation in the classic sense. Each player controls only one character on the field, and teamwork takes precedence over everything else. According to Sloclap’s explanation, if FC is a football simulation, Rematch is a football simulation. This definition clearly shows that the game emphasizes individual feelings on the field.

While the gameplay dynamics are often likened to Rocket League, Rematch uses more traditional sports game controls instead of physics-based structures. So instead of flying cars, there are players dodging opponents on the field, passes and quick turns. Yet, like Rocket League, it manages to carve out a niche for itself with a different formula.

The game’s developer, Sloclap, was previously known for fighting games like Absolver and Sifu. Now, the studio has moved from fighting to sports and seems to have brought that same fluidity and player-focused structure to Rematch. This helps the game not only be fun but also technically sound.

The full version of Rematch will be released on June 19 and will cost $24.99. The game’s creative director Pierre Tarno says they never considered making the game free. According to him, the best commercial success comes from making a really good game. And it seems that players agree. If you haven’t tried it yet, the beta is still available on the Steam page. It looks like the footsteps will be echoing on the field a lot this summer.
