Rematch’s Target Audience Doesn’t Like Football Much
Released last month, Rematch, while a football-themed game, appeals more to competitive online players than to those who enjoy traditional football games. Pierre Tarno, CEO of the game’s developer, Sloclap, stated that the player base is largely comprised not of football fans but of those interested in online competitive games.
Rematch Appeals to Competitive Gamers
Tarno explains this by using examples from the studio’s own staff. He notes that many members of the development team didn’t care about football, but even these individuals began to enjoy the game after the internal tournaments were held. He believes Rematch stands out more for its team dynamics and quick-reflex gameplay than for its football-based gameplay.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Tarno attributes Rematch’s current success to its positioning in the gap between big-budget football games. Unlike traditional gamers, Rematch’s current player base is comprised primarily of players accustomed to competitive online games. This audience prioritizes mechanics, not football itself.
Tarno states that Rematch’s long-term goal is to reach a broader football fan base. However, he notes that this audience typically doesn’t follow game news and is slow to learn about new releases. Therefore, they aim to grow through word of mouth.
Unlike traditional football games, Rematch’s style disrupts established strategies. However, Tarno believes that these players will eventually adapt to the game’s structure and develop a larger community. The game’s continued development through updates seems to be part of this process.
