Resident Evil 9 Originally Planned to Be Open World

Although Capcom had previously confirmed that Resident Evil 9 was in development, no official information about the game has been shared for a long time. However, recent leaks from reliable sources have revealed that the game originally featured a large open-world multiplayer structure. Moreover, this version featured iconic characters from the series such as Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine.

Resident Evil 9 Has Experienced Serious Changes in Development

Dusk Golem, known for Resident Evil leaks, states that the first version of the game began development in 2017 after Resident Evil 7’s launch performance did not meet expectations. This early version had an open-world structure and online multiplayer elements, completely unlike the previous games in the series. The center of the game was a tropical island inspired by Singapore, where Leon and Jill lived.

However, this project entered a “heavy reboot” process with the release of Resident Evil Village in 2021. The game structure and general concept were changed significantly. Still, some elements seem to have been preserved. Leon Kennedy remaining as the main character is one of these details. According to Dusk Golem, it is not yet clear whether Jill Valentine will be involved in the story.

On the other hand, Capcom’s other projects related to the Resident Evil universe are also on the agenda. While it has been confirmed that Revelations 3 has been canceled, it is reported that remake work for Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 0 is still ongoing. These developments show that Capcom will continue to support the series not only with new games but also with old classics.

Although it is not known exactly when Resident Evil 9 will be introduced, considering that development has been ongoing for years, it is thought that the official announcement is not too far away. Which elements the game will retain and which ones will be abandoned are still a matter of curiosity.
