Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Confession

Director Rian Johnson, who achieved great success with the “Knives Out” series, has broken his silence on the long-rumored but never-realized Star Wars trilogy. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he explained that there had been no concrete developments regarding the project and that his focus had shifted entirely.

The Star Wars Trilogy Was Over Before It Ever Began

Rian Johnson stated that after directing The Last Jedi in 2017, he and Lucasfilm had discussed a new three-film Star Wars project. However, with the release of Knives Out around the same time, Johnson’s attention shifted. “At the time, Kathy (Kathleen Kennedy) and I were developing ideas, but Knives Out came along and I moved in that direction,” Johnson explained, outlining why the trilogy didn’t progress.

According to statements in the interview, Johnson never elaborated on the project. There was no draft script or formal planning. The director made it clear that the process remained in the early stages, saying, “Everything was very conceptual. I never prepared a draft or a script.”

The director also expressed his openness to returning to the Star Wars universe. “If the opportunity arose in the future to do something in this universe, I would be very happy, but right now I’m doing my own thing and I’m quite happy,” Johnson said, expressing his love for the franchise: “It’s incredible to tell stories in this world and have people really connect with it.”

In 2022, Johnson made similar statements, saying he would be sad if he didn’t return to direct Star Wars, but added that it wouldn’t be the end of the world for anyone. With these new statements, it became clear that the eagerly awaited trilogy was shelved.
