Rogue Squadron TV Series Coming

Announced as a film in 2020, Rogue Squadron was set to be directed by Patty Jenkins. The project, which was said to feature fast-paced action and a new generation of pilots, would inject fresh energy into the Star Wars universe. However, due to scheduling conflicts with Wonder Woman 3 and Cleopatra, the film was postponed indefinitely. Now, years later, it’s being reshaped into a series.

Star Wars Begins a New Flight with Rogue Squadron

According to new reports, Rogue Squadron is among Lucasfilm’s current plans and is being developed as a Disney+ series. This decision seems in line with the studio’s recent shift in focus from feature films to digital projects. Currently, the only Star Wars series confirmed for Disney+ is the second season of Ahsoka. Therefore, Rogue Squadron could become one of the universe’s new flagship series.

Turning the project into a series could offer the story a broader narrative scope. An episodic structure, rather than a single film, would both increase character depth and provide the pilots with the opportunity to flesh out their stories. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has previously stated that they are open to the possibility of Rogue Squadron being turned into a series.

Patty Jenkins’s role in the project remains unclear. In an interview last March, the director said, “After Wonder Woman 3 was canceled, we finalized the Star Wars deal, and I’m currently developing a new draft for Rogue Squadron.” This statement suggests that Jenkins, at least, still has a role in the creative process.

Rogue Squadron was initially described as “a boundary-pushing adventure for a new generation of starfighter pilots.” If Lucasfilm can bring this vision to life in series form, it could bring back the classic space combat energy long missed in the Star Wars universe. The project, stalled for years, finally taking off seems to be a reward for both Jenkins and fans’ patience.
